THE ARAWAK CEMENT COMPANY is about to face serious competition for the first time in its 31-year history.

Yesterday, a new company, Hard Rock Cement, took possession of 20 000 tonnes of blended, hydraulic cement, imported from Portugal, and from today it will be available from retailers islandwide – selling for about 30 per cent less than the local product.Chairman and chief executive officer of Rock Hard Cement, Mark Maloney, told the DAILY NATION the company would continue importing the cement and would also be supplying retailers in Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica and the islands of the Eastern Caribbean.

Yesterday several tractor trailers crept along the road from the Bridgetown Port to the Flour Mill site where they offloaded thousands of bags of the commodity that arrived in bulk as well as the usual 42-kilogramme bags. (MB)
